Online & residential retreats for people living with HIV

We host a number of retreats every year where we take time out from our ordinary lives, to pray together, share stories and experiences, relax and reflect upon our lives as people living with HIV and seeking the presence of God in the midst of it all.

  • Where are the retreats?

In 2019 we held two retreat weekends held at Douai Abbey and Minsteracres retreat centres, and in 2021 we held an online retreat for the first time. Whether you join us in person or online, we hope you join us for a weekend of prayer, reflection, sharing, fun and fellowship.

  • What happens?

Through sharing and praying together and using art and music we hope to understand more clearly how God is present with us and in our experience of life with HIV and to reflect upon what HIV means in the context of our Christian faith. We also manage to get in some quiet walks in the countryside and some jokes and conversation down the local pub.

  • Is there pastoral support?

Our members provide sensitive pastoral support to each other. You will be treated with acceptance, understanding and encouragement. We are often joined by a priest who can lead some Services and speak to people confidentially if asked.

  • How much does it cost?

Many people who want to come to Douai each year find the full cost of £180 difficult. We understand that and want anyone who wants to attend to be able to do so. We ask that you contribute what you can afford. We offer partial & full bursaries for those who need this help. Click here for more information on bursaries.

‘I came to Douai with two problems that I wanted to address. I didn’t sort them out, but I came away with an inner peace that I haven’t felt in years. So, thank you.’

Christians from all denominations are welcome. Please note that these events are only open to people living directly with HIV.

All meals & accommodation provided. Some people may be asked to share rooms. You will need to bring: suitable clothing for fine and rainy weather, your own toiletries & suitable walking shoes

‘The Douai Retreat was a well needed get away from everyday life. We had a chance to reflect and share with each other about the journey living with HIV. It also gave us an opportunity to share our healing experiences. It was such a beneficial experience.’
